It's a fair thing to wonder, especially if you've got young children or a dog who'll be padding across it barefoot in July. The honest answer is yes — composite decking does warm up in direct sunlight, just like timber, stone, or any other surface in your garden. But how hot it gets, and whether it's actually a problem, depends far more on the choices you make than on the material itself.

Some are perfectly comfortable underfoot; others you'd want sandals for by mid-afternoon. The difference almost always comes down to colour, position, and a few practical details that are easy to get right at the planning stage and far harder to fix afterwards.

Why Composite Decking Heats Up in the Sun
Composite boards are made from a blend of recycled wood fibre and plastic polymers. Like any solid surface, they absorb energy from sunlight and convert it to heat. The darker the surface, the more solar energy it soaks up rather than reflects — which is exactly why a black car bonnet is painful to touch on a sunny day and a white one isn't.
In direct summer sun, any decking surface sits well above air temperature. On a warm UK afternoon of around 25°C, a dark composite board in full sun can comfortably reach 50°C or more at the surface, while a light grey or oak-toned board in the same spot might sit closer to 35–40°C — the difference between “too warm for bare feet” and “perfectly fine”. The board hasn't changed; only the colour has — and that alone makes the difference underfoot.

Does Composite Get Hotter Than Timber or Stone?
There's a persistent myth that composite decking is uniquely prone to overheating. It isn't. Testing consistently shows that the shade of the surface matters far more than whether it's wood or composite. A dark composite board and a dark timber board of similar colour reach broadly similar surface temperatures in the same sun — composite often runs a few degrees warmer, because its polymer content absorbs and holds heat slightly more readily, but it's nowhere near the gulf the myth suggests. Colour is the deciding factor, not the material name.
Where composite does differ is consistency. A timber deck weathers, greys off, and its colour drifts over the years, so its heat behaviour shifts too. A quality capped composite board holds its colour, so the deck you specify is the deck you'll have in five summers' time.
Stone is worth being straight about. A light, matte porcelain or vitrified paver will usually run cooler underfoot than composite in the same sun — it reflects more solar energy and sheds heat quickly once the shade comes over. If a genuinely cool surface in blazing full sun is your single highest priority, light porcelain has the edge. That said, the picture flips with darker or glossy stone, and brick, clay pavers and poured concrete can all run hotter than a light composite board. As with everything here, colour and finish drive the result more than the material name — and porcelain's small temperature advantage comes with its own trade-offs in feel, grip underfoot, and the warmth a timber-look deck brings to a garden.
Can the Heat Actually Damage Composite Decking?
For a UK garden, this is rarely something to lose sleep over. There is a genuine heat risk that catches people out: reflected sunlight from modern energy-efficient (low-E) glazing. Certain double- and triple-glazed units can act like a magnifying glass, concentrating reflected sun onto a narrow strip of decking and pushing surface temperatures far beyond normal — high enough, in rare cases, to distort boards. It's uncommon, but if you have large south- or west-facing glazing near the deck and notice a bright, concentrated reflection landing on the boards, flag it to your installer. It affects timber, composite and uPVC alike, and it's solvable with shading or careful board placement.
How to Keep Your Composite Deck Cool Enough to Enjoy
Choose a lighter board colour
This is the single biggest lever you have, and it costs nothing extra. If your deck gets full afternoon sun and bare feet will be the norm, lean towards lighter greys, oaks and weathered tones rather than charcoal or espresso shades. Build in some shade
A pergola, a sail shade, a large parasol or even a well-placed tree changes everything. Shading the area for the hottest part of the day keeps the surface temperature down and makes the space far more usable in a heatwave. Keep airflow under the deck
A deck with good ventilation underneath sheds heat far better than one sitting tight to the ground. It's another reason what's underneath matters as much as the boards on top.
Use rugs and soften the layout
An outdoor rug in the main seating or walking zone gives bare feet somewhere cool to land and breaks up the expanse of board in direct sun. It's a cheap, reversible fix if an existing deck runs warmer than you'd like.
A note on board profile
Hollow-core boards can run slightly cooler than solid boards because there's less mass to hold heat — but solid boards are stronger and generally the better long-term choice, especially under heavy use or a hot tub. We wouldn't pick a board on heat behaviour alone; colour and shade make a far bigger difference than profile.
