Can You Lay Composite Decking on a Slope? A UK Homeowner's Guide

Plenty of the gardens we're asked to transform across Merseyside and Cheshire are anything but flat. They fall away from the house, dip in the middle, or step down towards the fence. So the first question we hear is nearly always the same: can you lay composite decking on a slope, or does the whole garden need levelling first?


The honest answer is that a slope is one of the best reasons to choose a deck in the first place. A raised, level platform hides awkward ground that would cost a fortune to regrade, and it turns a hill you can't use into proper outdoor space. What matters is how the slope is handled underneath — because that is where a sloping deck is either built to last twenty-five years or quietly set up to fail.


This guide covers the two methods we actually use on sloping and uneven sites, how we get the falls and drainage right, and the mistakes that keep bringing us out to fix other people's decks.



First, Work Out How Much Your Ground Actually Falls


Before choosing a method, we measure the fall. On site we use a laser level — it reads the true drop across the whole area in one pass and takes the guesswork out of an uneven garden. If you're checking it yourself without one, a straight edge or string line run dead level from the highest point to the lowest will do the job: measure the gap at the low end and you have your fall. A garden that drops 50–100mm across a small patio is merely uneven. A garden that drops 300mm or more is genuinely sloping, and the two are dealt with in different ways.


It's also worth knowing what the ground is made of. Firm, established soil behaves very differently to soft, made-up ground or a garden that has recently been landscaped. Soft ground needs proper foundations no matter how gentle the slope, because the load has to end up on something solid.



Method One — Adjustable Pedestals for Gentle Slopes and Uneven Ground


For gardens that are uneven or gently sloping — up to roughly 150mm of fall — adjustable decking pedestals are usually the neatest solution. These are screw-jack supports that sit on a firm base and twist up or down, so we can bring every joist to a dead-level line without digging out the whole garden.


The method is simple but unforgiving of shortcuts. The pedestals have to sit on something solid — either existing concrete, or a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base with a paving slab under each support, never bare soil. We run a level along each joist and adjust the pedestals until it reads true, then check the cross-level between joists. Get the base right and a pedestal deck is quick to install, fully ventilated underneath, and flat on top.


Adjustable supports also make it straightforward to bring the finished deck to the right height at the back door — sitting just below the threshold, with no step up into the house. That level can be achieved with a posted frame too; the pedestals simply make the fine adjustment quicker, since each support twists to the exact height rather than being set once in concrete.



Method Two — Posts and a Raised Subframe for Steeper Slopes


Where the ground falls 300mm or more, the sensible approach is a posted subframe: concrete-set support posts carrying beams and joists, exactly like a raised deck. The high side might sit close to the ground while the low side stands on posts, giving you one level platform over ground that drops away sharply.


This is more involved. Posts are set into concrete footings dug below the ground, the frame is built up level off those posts, and on anything more than 600mm above the ground you are into balustrade and building-regulations territory — which we cover in our guides to Building a Raised Deck and Do You Need Planning Permission for Composite Decking? Done properly, a posted deck on a slope is completely solid, but it is genuinely structural work, not a job to improvise.


Why We Don't Just Pack Timber Under the Low Side


Homeowners sometimes ask why we don't simply pack the low side with offcuts of timber to bring it up to level. It looks like the quick fix, but it's the kind of shortcut that quietly fails.


Packing under joists creates point loads instead of spreading the weight, and timber packers sitting in a damp garden rot and compress — so the deck settles unevenly within a couple of seasons and develops a bounce. The deeper principle is one we build every deck around: we want as little of the framework in contact with the ground as possible. Ground contact means moisture, and moisture is what shortens a deck's life. So the job isn't just to support the frame — it's to support it properly while holding it clear of the ground, with an air gap underneath that lets the whole structure breathe and dry out after rain. Proper adjustable supports do exactly that. They spread the load, they don't move, and they keep the timber up out of the wet.


That same thinking is why we often build a hybrid frame. The main structure is timber — strong, cost-effective and easy to work to a precise level — but any part that meets the ground, such as the support posts, is recycled plastic rather than timber. Recycled plastic doesn't rot, so the one place moisture would otherwise attack the frame is taken out of the equation, while the bulk of the structure stays timber to keep the investment sensible. It's a deliberate decision, not a default: extra longevity where it matters, without paying to over-engineer the parts that were never at risk.



Getting the Falls and Drainage Right


Here is the part people get wrong on level-looking decks, never mind sloping ones. Composite boards aren't porous, so water runs off the surface rather than soaking through. The deck needs a very slight fall — around 1:80, or roughly 12mm over a metre — running away from the house so rain sheds off instead of pooling.


On a sloping garden this is usually easy, because the ground already falls the right way. The mistake is building the deck dead level on a site that drains back towards the house, which sends water at the wall. We also keep the ground beneath the deck free to drain, and leave the correct board and end gaps so water passes straight through between the boards. Both Millboard and Trex specify board and end gaps — Millboard for drainage and consistent lines, Trex to allow for thermal movement as well as drainage — and the exact figures vary by board and installation temperature. Leaving them out is what causes standing water and, in time, a slippery surface.



The Mistakes That Bring Us Out to Sloping Decks


Most of the failed sloping decks we're called to look at share the same handful of causes. Supports sitting on bare soil that has since sunk. No proper fall, so water pools along the low edge. Timber packing that has rotted away. A frame built with too little clearance underneath, so the space can never dry out. And balustrade left off a raised low side that clearly needed it.

So, Can You Lay Composite Decking on a Slope?


Yes — and often it's the best possible use of a sloping or uneven garden. Composite decking on a slope simply needs the right support method for the amount of fall: adjustable pedestals for gentle, uneven ground, or a posted subframe for steeper drops, with proper falls and drainage designed in from the start. Get the structure right and the finished deck is level, solid and completely at home on ground that was never flat to begin with.
