NewTechWood Antique Oak composite decking installed to replace an awkward stepped patio at this Liverpool home. The raised deck was carefully designed to accommodate two rear doors at different heights, creating a flush transition from the bifold doors into the garden and a spacious outdoor entertaining area.

Designing a Raised Composite Deck to Connect House and Garden

This composite decking project in Liverpool was designed to transform an awkward and uneven patio layout into a seamless outdoor living space that connects the house and garden.

The original garden required stepping down from the rear doors onto a patio before stepping back up again to reach the lawn. With young grandchildren regularly visiting, the homeowner wanted to simplify the layout and create a safer environment with fewer level changes.

After measuring the space, we designed a raised composite decking platform using NewTechWood Antique Oak boards that would create a continuous level from the house into the garden. The design carefully accommodates both rear entrance doors, which sit at slightly different heights, allowing the bifold doors to open onto a flush, level surface.

The finished deck now provides a spacious and practical entertaining area that flows naturally from the home into the garden while significantly improving accessibility and safety for the whole family.

The Challenge

The existing garden layout presented several challenges that made the outdoor space difficult to use effectively. The rear of the property featured a paved patio that sat lower than the internal floor level of the house, meaning anyone stepping out of the bifold doors had to immediately step down onto the patio. To reach the main garden area, another step back up was then required, creating an awkward and impractical transition between the house and garden.

In addition, the property has two rear entrance doors positioned at slightly different heights, which made it impossible to simply raise the patio to a single level without careful planning and design.

With young grandchildren regularly visiting, the homeowner wanted to simplify the layout and reduce the number of level changes wherever possible. The goal was to create a safer, more comfortable space that would allow the garden to be enjoyed for relaxing and entertaining, while ensuring the transition from the house into the outdoor space felt natural and seamless.

Our Design Approach

To overcome the level differences and create a more usable outdoor space, we designed a raised composite decking platform that would sit above the existing patio and establish a single, consistent level from the house into the garden.

Careful measurements were taken to ensure the structure could accommodate both rear entrance doors, which were positioned at slightly different heights. The deck framework was therefore designed and built bespoke to achieve a comfortable transition from each doorway while maintaining the clean, flush threshold required for the bifold doors.

The structure was constructed using a pressure-treated timber subframe, carefully levelled and supported to provide a strong and stable base for the decking boards. This raised framework allowed us to create the desired floor level without the need to remove the existing patio, while also ensuring proper ventilation and drainage beneath the deck.

Once the structure was complete, NewTechWood Antique Oak composite decking boards were installed using hidden fixing clips to create a smooth, uninterrupted surface. The warm tones of the boards complement the property and help define the space as a natural extension of the home, providing a comfortable and practical area for outdoor seating and entertaining.

The Result

The finished composite decking installation has completely transformed the way the garden connects with the house. By creating a continuous level from the bifold doors into the outdoor space, the awkward stepped transition has been removed and replaced with a clean, seamless threshold that feels like a natural extension of the home.

The raised NewTechWood Antique Oak composite decking now provides a spacious platform for outdoor seating and entertaining, while the single step down into the garden creates a comfortable and intuitive transition between spaces. The new layout is far safer and easier to navigate, particularly for the homeowner’s young grandchildren who can now move between the house and garden without negotiating multiple steps.

The result is a modern, low-maintenance outdoor living area that improves both the functionality and appearance of the garden, providing a practical space that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
