Replacing an Old Timber Deck with Millboard Composite Decking in Warrington

This Warrington garden project involved replacing an ageing timber deck with a Millboard smoked oak composite decking installation designed to work with the property’s tiered layout. The new decking was carefully planned to connect two separate garden levels while creating a practical and visually striking outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining.

Millboard decking was selected for its natural timber appearance, exceptional durability and low maintenance performance. The finished design incorporates several bespoke features including a CNC-cut bridge over a garden pond, linking steps between levels, integrated lighting and contemporary balustrade systems to create a high-quality outdoor living space.

The Challenge

The existing timber decking had deteriorated significantly over time and no longer suited the layout of the garden. The space was divided across two levels with a pond located between them, making the transition between areas awkward and limiting how the space could be used.

The client wanted to replace the ageing structure with a durable composite decking solution that would feel more integrated with the garden while also improving access between the two levels. They also wanted to introduce more interesting design elements rather than simply installing a basic rectangular platform.

Designing the new layout required careful planning to work around the pond, create safe and comfortable steps between levels and incorporate seating and planting areas without overcrowding the garden.

Our Design Approach

To transform the space, we designed a bespoke Millboard composite decking layout that followed the natural levels of the garden while introducing several integrated features.

The central design feature was a custom CNC-cut composite bridge, carefully fabricated to span the garden pond and create a striking visual connection between the upper and lower decking areas. This allowed both sections of the garden to feel connected while maintaining the existing pond feature.

The original timber steps linking the two levels were quite steep, which made them uncomfortable to use and not ideal for young grandchildren visiting the garden. As part of the redesign, the levels were carefully adjusted and new tiered steps were constructed with a shallower rise, creating a much safer and more comfortable transition between the two areas.

Raised planter walls were also constructed and finished with NewTechWood slatted composite cladding, adding texture and architectural interest to the space while helping to define the seating area.

To complete the installation, NewTechWood composite balustrade was installed for safety and visual definition, while LED lighting was integrated throughout the decking to enhance the space during evening use.

The Result

The finished installation completely transformed the garden, replacing the ageing timber structure with a durable and visually striking Millboard composite decking system.

The new design makes full use of the tiered garden layout, with the bespoke bridge and stepped levels allowing the space to flow naturally from one area to the next. Integrated planters, contemporary balustrade and subtle LED lighting add depth and character while ensuring the space remains highly functional for everyday use.

The result is a modern outdoor living space that combines architectural design features with low-maintenance composite materials, giving the homeowners a long-lasting garden feature ideal for relaxing and entertaining.
