Creating a Stylish Outdoor Entertaining Space in St Helens

This project in St Helens was designed for a young couple who enjoy spending time outdoors and wanted to transform their garden into a modern space for relaxing and entertaining.

The goal was to create a stylish composite decking area that felt like a natural extension of the home while providing space for outdoor seating, a hot tub, and decorative planting features.

By carefully designing the deck layout and positioning it level with the house threshold, the finished space creates a seamless connection between the indoor living area and the garden.

The Challenge

The homeowners wanted a contemporary outdoor living space that would feel both functional and visually striking.

One of the key design requirements was to raise the deck level to align with the cill height of the bi-fold doors, allowing the indoor kitchen and living space to flow directly onto the decking when the doors are opened.

The deck also needed to accommodate several features including a hot tub, integrated steps, and planters, all while maintaining a clean and balanced layout that would suit the modern garden design.

Our Design Approach

To create a visually striking finish, the composite decking boards were installed at a 45° angle, which adds movement and interest across the deck surface.

Light grey composite boards were chosen for the main deck area, framed with a contrasting dark grey perimeter border that defines the edges of the space and enhances the overall design.

Integrated steps were constructed to provide easy access to the hot tub, while custom openings were incorporated into the decking to allow for decorative planters that soften the space with greenery.

By aligning the deck level with the house threshold, the design creates a seamless indoor-outdoor transition, allowing the homeowners to enjoy a continuous entertaining space that connects the kitchen, patio doors, and garden.

The Result

The finished composite decking installation completely transforms the garden into a stylish outdoor living space.

The angled decking layout and contrasting border create a contemporary architectural feel, while the integrated steps, hot tub area, and planters add both functionality and visual interest.

When the bi-fold doors are open, the deck becomes a natural extension of the home, creating the perfect space for relaxing, entertaining guests, and enjoying the garden throughout the warmer months.
