NewTechWood Light Grey composite decking installed to replace a 20-year-old timber structure in Prescot. The new raised deck unifies previously disconnected levels into one spacious outdoor entertaining area, complete with integrated storage beneath the deck and privacy slatted screening.
Replacing an Old Timber Deck with a Modern Composite Deck in Prescot
This project in Prescot involved replacing a large timber deck that had served the property well for over 20 years. While the original structure had been well built, the timber subframe had deteriorated significantly and the deck had been extended several times over the years, resulting in multiple disconnected levels and an awkward layout.
The homeowner wanted to transform the space into a modern, functional outdoor entertaining area that would feel cohesive, safe, and visually appealing while making better use of the garden.

The Challenge
The existing deck structure had reached the end of its lifespan. Much of the timber framework had rotted, making replacement necessary for both safety and longevity.
Over time the deck had also been altered and expanded, leaving several sections at different heights that felt disconnected and inefficient. The layout limited how the space could be used and did not take full advantage of the garden views.
Because the deck sits significantly above the ground level, it was also important to design the new structure in a way that maintained a clean appearance while allowing practical access beneath the deck for storage.
Our Design Approach
The new deck was designed as a single cohesive structure that simplified the layout and created a much more usable outdoor space.
During the design stage, the homeowners initially found it difficult to visualise the scale of the new layout once the multiple levels were removed and replaced with one larger deck. To help communicate the proportions, we produced scaled drawings that included people and outdoor furniture, allowing them to clearly understand how the space would feel and function once built.
A treated timber subframe was constructed to provide a strong and durable foundation for the raised deck. NewTechWood composite decking boards in Light Grey were selected for the main deck surface, complemented by a contrasting Ebony perimeter border to frame the deck and create a refined finish.
To improve privacy and enhance the overall aesthetic, we installed softwood slatted screen fencing along one side of the deck. The raised structure also allowed us to create a practical storage area beneath the deck, complete with discreet access gates that were carefully designed to blend seamlessly into the cladded fascia.

The Result
The finished deck completely transforms the garden, replacing the ageing timber structure with a modern composite outdoor living space.
The simplified layout provides a generous entertaining area that feels open, cohesive, and much easier to use. The combination of Light Grey decking with the darker border creates a crisp contemporary look, while the slatted screening adds both privacy and architectural interest.
Beneath the deck, the integrated storage area adds valuable functionality without compromising the clean appearance of the structure.
The result is a durable, low-maintenance outdoor space designed for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying the garden for many years to come.
