Replacing a Timber Deck with Low-Maintenance Composite Decking
This project involved transforming an ageing timber deck into a modern outdoor entertaining space using NewTechWood composite decking in light grey. The garden already had a well-established layout with a deck positioned beside a garden bar and seating area, creating a natural hub for social gatherings.
Our goal was to refresh the space with durable, low-maintenance materials while preserving the character and functionality that the homeowners already enjoyed. The result is a clean, contemporary deck that blends seamlessly with the surrounding planting and garden features.

The Challenge
The garden already featured a raised timber deck that had become an important part of how the homeowners used their outdoor space. Positioned beside a garden bar and surrounded by established planting, the deck created a natural area for relaxing and entertaining.
However, after years of exposure to the elements, the timber boards had begun to deteriorate and show signs of rot. The surface was becoming worn and increasingly difficult to maintain, requiring regular treatment to keep it looking presentable.
Despite the condition of the materials, the overall layout of the deck worked extremely well within the garden. The integrated seating area and open space in front of the garden bar made it ideal for hosting guests and social gatherings.
The challenge was therefore to replace the ageing timber deck with a modern composite alternative, while carefully maintaining the layout and character of the original space that the homeowners already loved.
Our Design Approach
Because the existing deck layout worked so well within the garden, our approach focused on recreating the same footprint while upgrading the materials and overall finish.
We specified NewTechWood composite decking boards in Light Grey, a modern colour that complements the surrounding planting, fencing, and garden structures. Composite decking was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance qualities, allowing the homeowners to enjoy the space without the ongoing upkeep associated with traditional timber decking.
A key feature of the original deck was the integrated seating area, which had become a natural focal point for socialising. However, modern composite decking boards are manufactured in different profiles and dimensions compared to traditional timber boards. To ensure the seating retained the same proportions and clean appearance, the bench structure was carefully redesigned to suit the new board widths and thicknesses.
The homeowners also opted for a specialist hidden clip fixing system that allows the boards to be installed with an exceptionally tight 1 mm joint, rather than the more typical 4–5 mm spacing. This creates a much more refined finish and gives the deck a sleek, contemporary appearance.
To enhance the atmosphere and usability of the space in the evening, we incorporated subtle LED lighting within the design. Lights were installed around the perimeter of the deck and within the bench risers, adding a warm ambient glow that highlights the deck’s clean lines after dark.

The Result
The finished composite decking installation has completely refreshed the garden while maintaining the layout the homeowners had grown to love. By recreating the original footprint using NewTechWood Light Grey composite decking, the space now has a clean, modern appearance while offering the durability and low-maintenance benefits of composite materials.
The rebuilt integrated seating area creates a comfortable space for relaxing with friends and family, while the connection to the garden bar makes the deck the natural focal point for outdoor entertaining.
The tight 1 mm board joints, achieved using a specialist hidden clip system, give the deck a sleek and refined finish that elevates the overall look of the space.
Subtle LED lighting installed around the deck perimeter and within the bench risers adds warmth and atmosphere in the evenings, allowing the homeowners to continue enjoying the space long after sunset.
The result is a stylish and practical outdoor living area that blends seamlessly with the surrounding garden and provides the perfect setting for garden parties, social gatherings, and relaxed evenings outdoors.
